Another dive into interactive sound design, I was brought into the Golf+ team to add depth and realism to the sound experience of this Oculus Quest virtual reality golf game. Using a broad range of spatial audio tools, the environments for their new 18-hole full-course mode were built up from layers of ambisonics, point sources, stereo textures, and dynamically-driven interactive audio systems.

There are all kinds of little details like the amount of gentle bird calls lessening if it’s very windy, while ocean waves would increase in volume and pitch in high wind. Tree leaves shift through multiple layers based on weather conditions, and swinging the club drives a plethora of physics-reactive audio triggers based on speed, surfaces, and club choice.

From this video, “…it’s a combination of the video and the sound that makes it feel *so* real.”
